3 reasons to show up for the opener
Catch them before the room gets bigger
Music Venue Trust took the 2024 Glastonbury poster and removed every act that started out in a grassroots venue. Eight of the 96 remained. That is UK festival data rather than a measure of our scene, but the pattern holds. Headliners come from rooms this size, and the opener is the stage of it you can still see up close.
Under 1,000 plays a year, a track earns nothing
Spotify changed the rule in 2024. A track needs 1,000 streams in a rolling year before it earns any recording royalty, so anything below that line returns nothing to the artist. The door and the merch table have no threshold. What you spend in the room reaches them that night.
Showing up early is part of what keeps them open
Grassroots venues in the UK ran on an average profit margin of 2.5% last year, and 53% made no profit at all. Thirty closed for good, and 175 towns and cities no longer get regular touring shows. At a margin that thin, a quiet night is the difference between a good month and a bad one.
Music Venue Trust deleted every act that came up through a grassroots venue from the 2024 Glastonbury poster and eight of 96 names were left standing. Those are UK band festivals rather than techno line-ups, so read it as the shape of the thing and not a measurement of our scene. The money part is simpler. Spotify pays no recording royalty at all on a track under 1,000 streams a year. The door and the merch table have no threshold. Getting there an hour earlier is the cheapest thing on this list.
