THE SCIENCE

Your brain treats music like a reward

Researchers put people in a brain scanner and played them the music that reliably gives them goosebumps. Most studies guess at dopamine from heart rate or sweat. This one watched it being released. At the moment the feeling peaked, it showed up in the reward centre, the same place real rewards land.

Trust the chills

You can talk yourself into liking a track. You cannot talk your body into goosebumps.

Researchers put people in a brain scanner and played them the music that reliably gives them goosebumps. Most studies guess at dopamine from heart rate or sweat. This one watched it being released. At the moment the feeling peaked, it turned up in the reward centre, the same place real rewards land. So the shiver is not you being dramatic about a song, it is a measurement. Worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. Sharing a pathway with real rewards is not the same as being as important as them, and nobody has shown music is a biological need. What it does mean is that the response was caught happening rather than guessed at, which makes it the most honest thing you own about your own taste. You can talk yourself into liking a track. You cannot talk your body into goosebumps.
