THE DATA

THE BODY

Your body has a rhythm of its own

Researchers tracked 20 people going about their everyday lives. Their movements showed a recurring rhythm near two steps per second. That’s roughly 120 steps a minute.

THE CONNECTION

Dance music turns it up a notch

Dance charts pack in just above that walking pace, around 125 to 130 BPM. Familiar enough to move with. A little faster to keep things interesting.

Left to themselves, people move at about two steps a second, or 120 a minute. Dance charts pile up just above that, which is why a house track seems to fit your body.

Bonus: in one study, tracks at the exact same tempo still made people walk faster or slower depending on the music.
